Eloping in Bonifacio, Corsica, offers a uniquely intimate and breathtaking experience for couples seeking a romantic escape. Nestled on the southern of the island, Bonifacio is characterized by its stunning cliffs, azure waters, and charming old town. This picturesque setting is a hidden gem for those looking to exchange vows away from the traditional wedding hustle and bustle.
The dramatic cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea provide an extraordinary backdrop for an elopement ceremony. Couples can choose from various stunning locations, whether it's a secluded beach, the cliffs of Capo Pertusato, or one of the quaint, narrow streets in the historical old town. Each site encapsulates the essence of Corsican beauty and lends itself to a highly cinematic experience, ensuring that your wedding film is nothing short of magical.
The town itself is steeped in history, with its Roman and medieval architecture offering countless photo opportunities. The narrow, winding streets are lined with white-washed buildings, enhancing the romantic atmosphere. The vibrant sunset over the harbor creates an enchanting ambiance, making it a divine time for couples to exchange their vows or celebrate their union.
One of the key advantages of eloping in Bonifacio is the flexibility it affords. Couples can personalise their ceremony to reflect their unique relationship without the constraints typically associated with larger weddings. Whether you opt for a simple, intimate ceremony on a secluded beach or a grander affair on a cliffside, the beautiful vistas of Corsica can be easily tailored to fit your vision. Local officiants are available, offering services in multiple languages, which helps cater to couples traveling from around the world.
Furthermore, Bonifacio is accessible by ferry and has a small airport, making it a feasible destination for couples looking to elope. The charming island of Corsica offers a range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to quaint bed-and-breakfasts, allowing couples to choose their ideal romantic hideaway. Many local establishments also provide catering and celebration services, ensuring that your special day can be seamlessly organized with the help of local experts.
Nature lovers will particularly appreciate the idyllic surroundings Bonifacio offers. The region is not only known for its stunning landscapes but also its rich biodiversity. Couples can partake in various outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, or snorkeling, allowing them to create lasting memories beyond their wedding day. Exploring the natural beauty of Corsica together can imbue your elopement with even more adventure and sentimentality.
After the ceremony, consider dining at one of the local restaurants high up on the cliffs that serve traditional Corsican cuisine. The rustic flavors paired with breathtaking views can enhance the overall experience, making your special day even more unforgettable. Whether you choose a cozy bistro or a more upscale dining option, enjoying a meal together in such a beautiful setting is an experience worth savoring.
In summary, eloping in Bonifacio, Corsica, encapsulates romance, flexibility, and natural beauty. With its stunning vistas, charming streets, and rich culture, couples can craft an unforgettable experience that reflects their love story. From exchanging vows against breathtaking backdrops to exploring the island’s rich offerings, every moment will be a cherished memory. Bonifacio is not just a place to elope; it’s a destination that cultivates pure romance. In the case of this elopement the venue was the dramatic landscape of Iceland in winter itself. It was a challenging place to film in February, with wind, rain and snow pretty much the whole time and only a few hours of light each day but we all fully embraced it and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. We spent most of our time around Vik, a picturesque village nestled along Iceland's southern coast. It was a quite hairy 110 mile drive southeast of Reykjavik, but worth the trek for its dramatic scenery.

Jennifer and Bo’s Elopement Plans

Me with Jennifer and Bo, filming on one of Corsica’s many beautiful beaches.

Jennifer and Bo had been planning their elopement for many years, but the pandemic had other ideas so we had to postpone our filming for a few years but it was definitely worth the wait. The couple chose the beautiful town of Bonifacio on Corsica’s south coast for their elopement.

Planning the elopement was a collaborative process, as it would just be me and them for the couple of days, no photographer. I knew I wanted to take the couple up to the cliffs for the vow exchange as well as head down to one of the beautiful beaches for some portrait shots. The couple also had a boat trip planned which gave me some great footage to work with during the editing process.

We also settled on an interview style for the couple to tell their love story on camera, giving me a great narrative to work their film around.

It was a lovely and memorable few days walking the historic streets of Bonifacio, getting to know Jennifer and Bo and working with them to produce a cinematic memento of their elopement.

Wedding Videography Approach

Me filming a wedding in Portugal with my minimalist set up.

My main aim as a wedding videographer is to produce cinematic, yet authentic, mementos of a wedding day.  I want them to be stylish, filled with all the emotions of the day while being infused with a classic cinema flair, which I always have in the back of my mind when choosing which lens to use in a certain moment, how to frame a shot, the sounds and music I will use to tell that part of the story and thinking always about the edit.

Once I have these all story telling elements in place I make sure my films are as cinematic as possible, and what I mean by that is I use every tool and technique at my disposal, from the filming style on the wedding day, to the editing and colour grading techniques afterwards, to create a piece of work that feels like a mini-movie, like a short piece of classic cinema, with a proper beginning middle and end, establishing people, place and story as elegantly as possible, woven together with music I choose carefully for each project.

Most importantly though, I use equipment and a filming style on the day that allows me to capture these moments without leaving a heavy footprint on the day- I use very minimal equipment, similar to a photographer, and avoid stage managing the day in any way because the most important element of making a great film is authentic moments and emotions and the only way to achieve these is allow them to happen naturally, unhindered by over posing/staging and manufacturing the events.
